Second Lieutenant Kayla Freeman To Be Honored This Week

First African-American Woman Helicopter Pilot In The 200-Year History Of The Alabama National Guard Named 'Veteran Of The Year'

The Association of the U.S. Army West/Central Alabama chapter and the Alabama National Guard will honor Second Lieutenant Kayla Freeman, 26, as the "Veteran of the Year" at the annual Women’s Leadership Luncheon February 26.

Television station WVTM reports that Governor Kay Ivey will present Freeman with the award.

Freeman is a graduate of Tuskegee University, holding a B.S. degree in Aerospace Science Engineering. She earned her helicopter wings in 2018, and was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. She flew more than 250 combat flight hours with no incidents, and was presented with a 2019 Air Medal award.

“Freeman is a perfect example of the quality of soldiers we have in our military,” said Nicolas Britto, president, AUSA West/Central Alabama Chapter.

Freeman will be honored at a ceremony set for February 26 at the Tuscaloosa River Market. The event begins at 11:30 a.m.
