Up And Back... Again

Reusable Vehicle Flight Experiment at Noshiro Testing Center

The third round of flight testing for the RVT (reusable flight test vehicle) is over at Noshiro Testing Center, Akita Prefecture, Japan. The second series tests, conducted by the Japanese Institute of Space and Aeronautical Study, was flown in 2001. An engine was tested in March 2003.

The experiment this time consisted of a static firing test and three successful experimental flights, according to Noshiro officials. Those tests are expected to add insight into the use of:

1) cryogenic tanks made from lightweight composite materials,
2) a propulsion system with better endurance, and
3) a plan for repeated flights and turnaround programs.

For the next target study, an exo-atmospheric ballistic flight vehicle based on the present concept is also proposed as an extension of the RVT experiment. It would be devoted to a developing a new type of reusable rocket.
