Boeing Rotorcraft recently took
delivery of its first V-22 electric rescue hoist designed and
manufactured by Goodrich Corporation. The hoist was installed onto
a V-22 aircraft scheduled for delivery into service for the U.S.
Air Force later this year.
The new AC-powered hoist incorporates Goodrich's "Category One"
technology and uses a proprietary square motor design to improve
rescue safety, simplify wiring and ease serviceability. This motor
design also offers Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) protection
allowing the hoist to pass the most stringent military
requirements. The safety of the hoist is further enhanced by
proprietary systems that allow the hoist to function at unlimited
fleet angles and without the need for cool down.
According to Steve Loye, Vice President, Goodrich Hoist and
Winch, "We are very excited by our participation in the V-22
program and look toward a long relationship with Boeing in support
of this aircraft. This program provided a unique challenge as the
hoisting operation is performed through the rear cargo door.
Consequently the Goodrich and Boeing engineering team had to
develop a unique solution while maintaining the proven
functionality of the Goodrich Category One hoist."
Goodrich produces both traditional level wind and
industry-unique translating drum cable management systems. Because
the mission capabilities of the two design concepts are so unique,
Goodrich distinguishes between the technologies by category
distinctions -- translating drum as Category One and the
traditional level wind as Category Two. Goodrich is the only
manufacturer of the Category One technology in the world.
