Cessna Cancels Upcoming Events Due To Economic Crisis

Employees Receive Latest Round Of Layoff Notices

A spokesman from the Cessna Aircraft Company announced last week the cancellation of two upcoming company events, blaming the cutbacks on the economic recession.

Cessna spokesman Doug Oliver said that both a Cessna suppliers' symposium scheduled for March 15-18 and a Cessna customer conference scheduled for April 27-29 have been cancelled as a cost-saving measure.

"Like all the other companies, we feel that Cessna and our supplier base are looking for ways to cut costs right now," Oliver told the Wichita Business Journal.

Oliver also announced the latest round of Cessna employee layoffs, saying that affected employees would be receiving 60-day layoff notices on Thursday. Oliver said the layoffs are to be the last expected in Cessna's plan to cut 4,600 employees, most of them in Wichita.

As ANN previously reported, Cessna Chairman and CEO Jack Pelton termed the cuts "profound," but necessary, due to slumping sales and global economic conditions "unprecedented in recent memory."
