A possible candidate for incoming FAA administrator has been laying the groundwork in establishing his candidacy for leadership in aviation safety. John Boccieri, former fighter and United pilot, Congressman, and Air Force commander, made his bureaucratic bones in his investigation of the Colgan Air Flight 3407. Now, having built a suitable resume for chief administrator of the FAA, Boccieri lies near the top of the list for the head honcho of the aviation regulator, alongside David Bourne, director of the Teamsters airline division, and Joe DePete, president of the Air Line Pilots Association.

Changes in Motion to Allow Drone Flight in Parks, Beaches in State

The Oregon Parks Department has some promising rule changes for drones and model aircraft, and they're asking for comments. Their new proposal floats a change that would allow operators to fly freely throughout Oregon State Parks, rather than being restricted to limited areas clearly delineated for drone flight. The rule would also create no-fly zones in some campgrounds, wildlife protection zones, and parking lots, allowing for a sufficient buffer for privacy, safety, and wildlife protection.

Modification Specialist to Stock Avance L3, L5 Systems for Quicker Installation

StandardAero will soon offer a large increase in Gogo Avance L3 and L4 installation slots thanks to a volume deal signed last week. The slots are available for a range of business jets, including the Dassault Falcon, Bombardier, Hawker, Gulfstream, Embraer and Citation series in service with operators from the US and Canada. Upgrades will be managed at StandardAero’s centers in Houston, Texas, Springfield, Illinois, and Augusta, Georgia. The move is just another example of the increasing dominance of Gogo's internet connectivity products in the business aviation sector.

"The Owl's Night Continues" Mission for Synspective Takes Off

Rocket Lab USA announced the successful deployment of their most recent mission after placing a Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite into orbit from the Mahia, New Zealand launch complex. The satellite will join the Synspective constellation above in order to offer clients ground survey and imaging from above with a resolution as tight as 1 meter at a swath width of anywhere from 10 to 30 kilometers. The company hopes to have at least 6 satellites in their nascent constellation by 2023, with at least 30 by decade's end.

Full Flight Sim Ready for Service, EASA and SACAA-Approved Courses on Tap

SimAero's Johannesburg Flight Training Center has completed EASA certification on its ATR 42/72 full flight sim, allowing South African airlines a conveniently located, domestic training system that's ready to go. One of the initial clients on board with the trainer, and first pilots to test out the new system, was fleet and training manager for Air Mauritius, Olivier Bourgogne. He gave it the go-ahead for use in his airline's needs, saying it went above and beyond company requirements to train pilots on the ATR series.

Upgrade Program Aims to Create Euro Attack Helicopter

Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation awarded a contract to Airbus Helicopters for the development, production, and initial in-service support of the Tiger MkIII attack helicopter upgrade program. The org represents a series of Spanish and French armament stakeholders, allowing both countries to avail themselves of cost benefits and economies of scale only available through a joint project. The contract to modernize the Tiger includes the upgrade of 42 French helicopters, with an additional option for 25, and 18 for Spain. The contract also contains a possible addition in the future, should Germany choose to upgrade to the MKIII.

On February 13, 2022, about 1402 eastern standard time, a Pilatus PC-12, N79NX, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Beaufort, North Carolina. The commercial pilot, student pilot, and 6 passengers were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The airplane departed Pitt-Greenville Airport (PGV), Greenville, North Carolina, about 1235, and landed at Hyde County Airport (7W6), Engelhard, North Carolina, at 1255. Then, the airplane departed runway 29 from 7W6, about 1335.
