Lessons Of History -- 'That B.W.M.'

“So, What Do You Think Of That B.W.M. Over There?”

By Wes Oleszewski, Aero-News NetworkSpaceflight Analyst  Back in 2010 I was at the Kennedy Space Center’s press site covering the STS-135 launch for the Aero-News Network. Of course, while doing that you spend a lot of time simply waiting for things to happen. In that process I was chatting with a well-known space reporter who had been covering such events for many years. Our conversation touched on the Obama administration’s recent defunding of NASA’s Constellation program. The reporter thumbed toward the recently constructed mobile launcher that had been intended for the also de-funded Ares-I vehicle and asked me, “So, wha

SkyWest Ordered to Continue Service to Rural and Small Airports

ALPA Applauds DOT Position, Citing Public Funding During Pandemic

The Air Line Pilots Association has commended the Department of Transportation on its work in ensuring continued airline service to small and rural communities throughout the US. ALPA noted the recent taxpayer subsidies issued to SkyWest in recent years, bolstering their bottom line and hopefully maintaining service to those areas that might otherwise be unprofitable. The airline recently notified the Department of Transportation of its intent to discontinue Essential Air Service to 29 cities, citing problems in staffing flights amidst a small but growing pilot shortage. The Department rejected that plan, demanding the airline continue service to each city until a replacement i

AD: MARS A.S. Parachutes

AD 2022-07-05 Identifies The Unsafe Condition As The Length Of The Ripcord Between The Pins Being Too Long

The FAA is superseding Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2022-05-09, which applied to certain MARS A.S. emergency parachutes. AD 2022-05-09 required removing emergency parachutes with certain manufacture dates or serial numbers from service. Since the FAA issued AD 2022-0509, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) superseded its mandatory continuing airworthiness information (MCAI) to correct an unsafe condition on this aviation product. The MCAI identifies the unsafe condition as the length of the ripcord between the pins being too long, which could cause a malfunction of the emergency parachute. This AD retains the actions required by

Aero-News: Quote of the Day (03.22.22)

“So, what do you think of that B.W.M. over there?” “B.W.M.?” I frowned in reply. “Yeah,” he smirked, “Big Waste of Money.” Considering that the Obama administration had, literally with the stroke of a pen, recently wasted more than 11 billion dollars in spaceflight investment that had actually passed through Congress by a margin of about 400 to 8 votes, that restatement seemed quite out of place. “It’ll only be a waste when they take a torch to it,” was my reply. Source: Part of the narrative from an intriguing story by ANN's Space Correspondent (and sometimes 'spacy' correspondent) describing his study of the transtion form the ARES of old to today's SLS... such as it is.
