Thunderbirds Forced To Drop Out of Airshow

Maintenance Crewmember Affected by COVID, Grounds Flights

It was a matter of time... but the US Air Force Thunderbird airshow performance at the upcoming July 22 Wings Over Warren Airshow has been cancelled after a Thunderbird crewmember was found to have been exposed to the COVID-19 infection and has tested positive. As a result, the Thunderbirds have stood down for this event. Col. Brian L. Rico, commander of the 90th Maintenance Group at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, confirmed the news to local media.

EAA Aviation Museum Reopening To Public August 3

Still; Some Areas To Remain Closed For Public Health And Safety

The EAA Aviation Museum in Oshkosh, which has been closed since late March because of the COVID-19 outbreak, will reopen on a limited basis beginning Monday, August 3, at 10 a.m. The museum will have limits on the size of groups and total number of visitors allowed in the facility at any time. In addition, high-touchpoint areas and exhibits will remain closed and higher levels of cleaning and disinfecting are part of the reopening process throughout the facility.

2020 KC Air Show Postponed

US Navy Blue Angels Will Headline July 3-4, 2021

KC Air Show Charities announced that the 2020 KC Air Show is being postponed due to ongoing COVID-19 safety concerns and rescheduled from September 5-6, 2020 to July 3-4, 2021 at New Century AirCenter. The September 2020 show was to be headlined by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds who will be replaced by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels in the 2021 performer lineup. Tickets already purchased for 2020 will be honored for 2021 at the lower 2020 price.

NTSB Prelim: Lankenau Sopwith 9400

Control Failure Brings Down Sopwith

On July 3, 2020, a Sopwith 9400 experimental airplane, N5539, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Van Alstyne, Texas. The pilot received minor injuries and the passenger was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 test flight. According to the pilot this was the 23rd test flight of the airplane, which was built following original design drawings. The flight was scheduled to be a short flight to confirm flying and landing wire deflections, flight control synchronization while under air loading, and to perform an aerial reconnoiter for potential obstacles at the approach end of the runway.
