Hurricane Chasers Gear Up For Charley

Mother Nature is poised to unleash hurricane-force winds and torrential downpours on MacDill AFB in the wee hours of Aug. 13 from Hurricane Charley. While most people at MacDill have battened down the hatches and headed away from danger, the pilots and meteorologists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration grabbed their gear to head directly into the storm.

Two Marines Lost

Two Marines were killed and three others were injured the night of Aug. 11 when a CH-53 helicopter (file photo of type, below) flying in support of security and stabilization operations in Iraq's Anbar province crashed, according to the Multinational Force in Iraq.

One Marine Lost, 14 Injured In Afghan Helo Accident

UH-60 Black Hawk Down In Khowst Province

One US Marine is dead, 14 others hurt after a UH-60 Black Hawk (file photo of type, below) went down in eastern Afghanistan. In a statement from the military, officials said the injured service members were taken to Forward Operating Base Salerno for treatment. Four had injuries serious enough to require further evacuation to the hospital at Bagram Air Field.
