In the skydiving community, flying head down is quite a common
position for various formations, but it was recently something
quite different for members of the Golden Knights U. S. Army
Parachute Team ... and it caused quite a splash!
Says The Airplane Might Have Been Saved But For The Muddy
Field
In an account on the Liberty Foundations website, chief pilot
Ray Fowler says the organizations B-17 would have likely only
suffered minimal damage from Monday's engine fire if local fire
crews had been able to get across the muddy field and extinguish
the flames.
"You’re on fire! Get it on the ground now!” Within
minutes of those words being spoken, news that Liberty Belle was
down arrived in every aviation inbox in the world. Facebook was
alive with chatter, Linked In passed condolences, and Twitter was a
race to see who was most informed.
A second test of the X-51A Waverider flew June 13, 2011, in the
Point Mugu Naval Air Test Range over the Pacific Ocean, bringing
significant hypersonic research data in a less than successful
flight test.
