In April 2023, Taiwan’s military news agency released photos of a Taiwanese military training exercise. Among the photos was a depiction of a young Taiwanese pilot conducting a pre-flight inspection of his aircraft. The left shoulder of the aviator’s flight-suit is clearly visible and emblazoned with an embroidered patch to which Beijing has taken particular and pointed umbrage.
On 19 February 2021 a Japanese Air Force pilot and his American instructor perished when the T-38C Falcon in which the pair were conducting a cross-country training flight crashed during a VFR approach to Alabama’s Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM). Comes now 2023, and U.S. military aviation officials are evaluating the effectiveness and possible culpability of a U.S.-run program by which foreign aviators are taught, ostensibly, to speak, read, and communicate in the English language.
