Airborne 12.03.14: Final 787 Battery Report, Paraplegic Pilot, TSA Security Mess

An NTSB report on the Boeing 787 fire of a lithium-ion battery that occurred in January of 2013 has been issued. At that time, ground workers discovered smoke and flames coming from an auxiliary power unit lithium-ion battery in a Japan Airlines 787 that was parked at the gate at Boston Logan International Airport. The NTSB said that the fire began after one of the battery’s eight cells experienced an internal short circuit leading to thermal runaway of the cell, which propagated into full battery thermal runaway.
