American Kirby Chambliss got his first win in a long time in the Red Bull Air Race series in the stop at Budapest, Hungary. Nine years and 40 races since he last stood atop a Red Bull Air Race podium, the two-time series champion came alive last week, taking the fourth – and most prestigious – round of this year's championship with a run nearly six-tenths of a second faster than anything he'd managed all weekend, denying Hungary pace-setter Pete McLeod at the final hurdle. Aero-TV: UAvionix - Transitioning Between Manned & Unmanned Technologies

ADS-B For Airplanes And Drones…

ADS-B technology developed by uAvionix has come full circle. The company began with a device developed for manned aircraft, scaled that down for the drone market, and now has scaled back up with a new device for manned aircraft with the Echo UAT system. Ryan Reed, director of Communications and Support for uAvionx, told ANN news editor Tom Patton at Sun 'n Fun in April that the early devices were heavy and used a lot of power, which is not ideal for small UAVs. Program Picks Up In-Flight Testing After 2016 Inflight Breakup

Bell Helicopter has confirmed that the Bell 525 Relentless program has resumed flight test activity after receiving an experimental certificate renewal from the FAA. Researchers have uncovered a photograph that they say suggest Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan may have survived a crash during their around-the-world attempt, been captured by the Japanese military, and remained prisoners until they died in custody on the island of Saipan. The investigators also claim that the U.S. Government was aware of what happened to the famous aviatrix and covered it up, suggesting she may have been on an espionage mission. The photograph will be shown as part of a docu

ANN's Daily Aero-Term (07.10.17): Ground Controlled Approach

Ground Controlled Approach A radar approach system operated from the ground by air traffic control personnel transmitting instructions to the pilot by radio. The approach may be conducted with surveillance radar (ASR) only or with both surveillance and precision approach radar (PAR). Usage of the term “GCA” by pilots is discouraged except when referring to a GCA facility. Pilots should specifically request a “PAR” approach when a precision radar approach is desired or request an “ASR” or “surveillance” approach when a nonprecision radar approach is desired.
