Atlas Rocket History

With the first scheduled flight of a Falcon 9 rocket set for Friday, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is fond of pointing out that the first 12 flights of the Atlas rocket did not perform as expected, and now it is a very reliable launch system. That sent us looking for some history of the Atlas rocket program.
