In a contest overseen by the National Mediation Board (NMB), the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) soundly defeated the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) in an election to represent nearly 4,600 Mechanic and Related employees at US Airways. The IAM received 1,903 votes, or 58 percent of all votes cast in the five-week election.

Justice Department Files To Block US Airways, American Airlines Merger

Six State And The D.C. Attorneys General Join The Federal Government In The Action

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit to block the merger of US Airways and American Airlines on the grounds that it would "substantially lessen competition for commercial air travel throughout the United States."  According to a statement from Assistant Attorney General Bill Baer, "neither airline needs this merger to succeed.  We simply cannot approve a merger that would result in U.S. consumers paying higher fares, higher fees and receiving less service."

Turkish Pilots Kidnapped In Beirut

IFALPA Calls For Their Immediate Release

On August 9, two Turkish Airlines pilots were kidnapped while traveling on a bus going from Beirut airport to their crew hotel. They are now reportedly being held hostage by a terrorist group, who says they would release the pilots in exchange for nine Lebanese citizens held hostage in Syria.
