Students From Six Universities Invited To Participate In the Program
NASA and the National Space Grant Foundation have selected seven projects from six universities to participate in the 2014 Exploration Habitat (X-Hab) Academic Innovation Challenge. Throughout the 2013-2014 academic year, the undergraduate student teams will attempt to meet a series of milestones to design, manufacture, assemble and test systems and concepts that could be used in future deep-space habitats.
Possible Sources Include Merging Or Exploding Stars
Astronomers have detected the first population of radio bursts known to originate from galaxies beyond our own Milky Way. The sources of the light bursts are unknown, but cataclysmic events, such as merging or exploding stars, are likely the triggers. A radio burst is a quick surge of light from a point on the sky, made up of longer wavelengths in the radio portion of the light spectrum.
Three Micro-Thruster Technologies Determined To Have Potential
NASA selected three proposals for the development of lightweight micro-thruster propulsion technologies that are small in size but have big potential. NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate selected the miniaturized electrospray propulsion technologies to perform stabilization, station keeping and pointing for small spacecraft.
Astronomers making visible-light observations with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have deduced the actual color of a planet orbiting another star 63 light-years away. The planet is HD 189733b, one of the closest exoplanets that can be seen crossing the face of its star.
