NASA is funding the development of a prototype system to provide
aircraft with updates about severe storms and turbulence as they
fly across remote ocean regions. Scientists at the National Center
for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colo., in partnership
with colleagues at the University of Wisconsin, are developing a
system that combines satellite data and computer weather models
with cutting-edge artificial intelligence techniques.
Thermal Core Testing Complete, Data To Be Analyzed
Northrop Grumman Corporation has completed testing on a model of
the "core" section of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to
validate the observatory's sophisticated thermal modeling and
design. The company is leading an industrial team in the design and
development of the Webb Telescope for NASA Goddard Space Flight
Center.
Arctic sea ice thinned dramatically between the winters of 2004
and 2008, with thin seasonal ice replacing thick older ice as the
dominant type for the first time on record. The new results, based
on data from a NASA Earth-orbiting spacecraft, provide further
evidence for the ongoing transformation of the Arctic's ice
cover.
