AMA Drone Report 05.24.18: Drone Rescues, AMA Celebrates, Onerous Ohio Regs

As the reputation of the drone community, hobby and professional, continues to evolve, drones involved in rescue and recovery efforts are making our rep shine ever brighter... and we could use all of that we can get. A recent example resulted in the the recovery of two hikers and an incapacitated dog who found themselves stranded in New Mexico along a wooded hiking trail -- and who now owe their well-being to the use of a firefighter's personal drone. A five member search team was deployed when one of hikers, a man and a woman, called 911 at 1700 local time, to request help. Aireon System Deployment Continues With Sixth Successful Launch

Launch Comes On The Heels Of The United Kingdom's Air Traffic Services Provider NATS Joining Aireon As Investors

Aireon has launched and deployed its sixth space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) payload, hosted by the Iridium NEXT satellite constellation. A flight-proven SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off Tuesday from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, bringing the total number of Aireon payloads in orbit to 55. This leaves just two more launches of 10 satellites each before the launch campaign concludes in 2018. The Aireon system will go live in 2018, with the intention to start operational trials over the North Atlantic in early 2019.

Steve Jurczyk Appointed NASA Associate Administrator

Krista Paquin Retires; Melanie W. Saunders Named Acting Deputy Associate Administrator

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine has named Steve Jurczyk as associate administrator, the agency's highest-ranking civil servant position. Jurczyk has been serving in the position in an acting capacity since March 10. In addition, Deputy Associate Administrator Krista Paquin will retire from NASA at the end of May. Melanie W. Saunders has been assigned as the acting deputy associate administrator, effective June 10.
