The FAA has announced and is requesting comments on a policy for the type certification of certain UAS as a special class of aircraft under our regulations. The rule-making is being targeted, primarily, at the upcoming generation of delivery drone systems. This proposed policy applies only to the procedures for the type certification of UAS, and is not intended to establish policy impacting other FAA rules on unmanned aircraft, such as operations, pilot certification, or maintenance.
