Twenty-Four Add'l F/A-22s To Be Produced Over Next Two
Years
Lockheed Martin announced Thursday the company has been awarded
a $2.9 billion fixed-price contract by the USAF for continued
production of F/A-22 aircraft through November 2007.
While the glamour of piloting a UAV may not match that of flying
F-15 Eagles or F-16 Fighting Falcons, a group of enlisted airmen at
Ali Base, Iraq are using their wings to perform much the same tasks
as those flying the heavier equipment -- providing security,
through air superiority.
Raytheon's Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) destroyed a ballistic
missile target outside the earth's atmosphere during a Missile
Defense Agency/ Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Program
flight test Thursday over the Pacific Ocean. It was the sixth
successful intercept for the Aegis BMD program using the SM-3.
Northrop Grumman -- in competition with Britain's BAE Systems
for a federal contract to equip commercial airliners with a missile
defense system -- took the wraps off their proposed method last
week in Mojave, CA.
