ACI-NA Commissioners Award Scholarships To Aviation Students

Two Students Receive Scholarships Worth $2,500 Each

Airports Council International - North America’s (ACI-NA) Commissioners’ Committee accepted the Scholarship Review Committee's recommendation to award scholarships of $2,500 each to two aviation students, at the ACI-NA Commissioners’ Committee meeting in Calgary. Recipients include Deanna K. Stoddard, a graduate student at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and Nicholas A. Keller, a graduate student at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Single-Engine Bellanca Floatplane Hit And Severed A Power Line

One Of Seven Light Airplane Accidents During One Week In Alaska

NTSB officials are investigating a fatal accident that took place on the McKeon Flats near China Poot and Alaska’s Neptune Bay on August  31, that fatally injured a Girdwood AK, pilot. George Vonderheide, 66, was killed when his single-engine Bellanca 7GCBC floatplane collided with a power line crossing the Wosnesenski River. He was the sole occupant.

After an investment of $250,000 and five years of research, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has found a way to address local residents’ concerns about noise from its training aircraft. The university has installed new noise reduction exhaust systems and is continuing to conduct research on new quieter propellers in its Daytona Beach campus fleet of Cessna 172 training aircraft.

Kotzebue, Alaska Airport Gets $15.5 Million Safety Grant

Will Provide For Improved Safety Areas On Main Runway

Ralph Wien Memorial Airport in Kotzebue, Alaska (OTZ), has received a $15.5 million federal grant to expand runway safety areas (RSAs). The grant, announced late last week by U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood and Acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta, will help improve RSAs at both ends of Runway 9/27, which is the longer of the airport’s two runways.
