ICON Aircraft has been granted a waiver by the FAA to allow a maximum gross takeoff weight to sixteen-hundred-eighty pounds, which the company says will allow it to proceed with producing the airplane. The company plans to have the first production airplane flying in 2014, but ICON has made predictions about production dates in the past that have not been met. In addition, Hawkins said that the airplane’s performance will be negatively affected by the increase in weight. The price has gone up as well, with a new ICON A-5 now expected to cost about 189-thousand dollars
