"I'm actually going to try to take it to Miramar if
possible."
Source: Fateful words spoken by the pilot of a
Marine Corps F/A-18D that crashed into a residential neighborhood
near MCAS Miramar on December 8, 2008. Audio tapes of exchanges
between the pilot and ATC, released Tuesday, show the unnamed
airman passed up at least two chances to land at a facility with an
approach over open water, after reporting engine failure. Four
people were killed when the plane crashed two miles short of the
runway.
