"Bittersweet's the word. It's been [the carrier for] a lot of
different projects in the years I've been here. Very satisfying to
be able to support them, but to realize that there aren't anymore
is sad."

piloted NASA's venerable B-52B, Balls Eight, on its last
operational flight last month. The aircraft that carried the X-15
and the X-24B aloft fulfilled its last mission by launching the
hypersonic X-43A on a flight that broke Mach 10. Balls Eight will
make one last flight -- to a museum. Which one has not yet been
announced.
