Initiated in 1992, the AST Program is a NASA/ US industry/ FAA
partnership for developing high-payoff technologies to enable a
safe, highly productive global air transportation system. This
system will include a new generation of environmentally-compatible,
economical aircraft.
Long range radar that scans the sky in all directions to detect
enemy aircraft and missiles. Detection and warning occur early
enough to allow fighters to intercept and destroy the threat before
it reaches the target.
