Airbus Exec Says Downturn Could Scrap 27% Of Order Book

Weakening Aviation Cycle Anticipated

In a worst-case scenario, Airbus could see 27% of its record airplane order backlog canceled or deferred as the aviation industry cycle weakens, Chief Operating Officer for Customers John Leahy told analysts recently.

Carrier Places 16 Firm Orders, Eight Purchase Rights

Aero-News has learned that over the weekend, Boeing and Bahrain's national carrier Gulf Air finalized negotiations for up to 24 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in a deal that could be worth approximately $3.9 billion at list prices if all options are exercised. The agreement is for 16 787s on direct order, with purchase rights for eight additional planes.

As ANN reported, the aircraft, inbound from Beijing, touched down short of the runway at London's Heathrow Airport, skidding to a violent stop that, fortunately, only resulted in some minor injuries to those onboard.

Similar Incident Occurred In December

The FAA is investigating an alleged air traffic control error that put two planes landing at Newark Liberty International Airport closer than federal guidelines allow. The incident occurred at 2:10pm last Wednesday, and involved Continental Flight 536, a Boeing 737 arriving from Phoenix, and Continental Express Flight 2614, an Embraer 145 arriving from Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Associated Press reports.
