A federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order halting the shortening of the runway at Santa Monica Airport (KSMO), which was scheduled to begin Monday, October 9th. In his order, Judge Ronald S. Lew, Senior U.S. District Judge, said that the agreement reached between the FAA and the City of Santa Monica violated California law which requires public hearings on such issues. While the California Public Utilities Code does imply "allowance for adoption of settlements in closed session" ... it "cannot be construed to empower a city council to take or agree to take, as part of a non publicly ratified litigation settlem

Successful Third Launch Brings 10 More Aireon Payloads To Orbit

Space-Based ADS-B Data Already Displaying Significant Value

The third batch of ten Iridium NEXT satellites carrying Arieon ADS-B payloads has been successfully launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. This launch has increased the total number of Aireon payloads in orbit to 30, with another 45 destined for space in a series of five additional launches planned over the next ten months.  Aireon is well on its way to become the first to provide global, real-time air traffic surveillance and tracking to air navigation service providers (ANSPs) and aviation stakeholders.
