Horizon Picks P&W PT6A For Hybrid eVTOL

Says Engine Is ‘Optimal Choice’ For Full-Scale Cavorite X7 Aircraft

New Horizon Aircraft, dba Horizon Aircraft, a Lindsay, Ontario-based aerospace engineering firm developing a hybrid eVTOL aircraft, announced it selected the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A turboprop engine for its full-scale Cavorite X7 aircraft.

The PT6A turboprop engine family is considered one of the most reliable and efficient engines in production and is one of the most popular in its class. Horizon said its proven performance across a broad variety of aircraft made it the optimal choice for its Cavorite X7, which will actually fly most of its mission as a conventional airplane. The engine’s architecture and modular reverse-flow design will simplify both installation as well as routine maintenance operations.

The Cavorite X7 differs from most all-electric eVTOLs in development now in that its hybrid gas/electric powerplant is able to undertake real-world emergency, military, and commercial operations without depending on any battery-charging infrastructure that may be absent or unreliable in remote or off-grid locations.

Equipping the Cavorite X7 with the PT6A engine provides it with the capabilities of speed, range, efficiency, and reliability that helicopters or typical eVTOLS are unable to match. At the same time, it will reduce hydrocarbon emissions by up to 30 percent compared to conventional aircraft on similar missions.
