Additional ~300 Patents Takes Archer’s Total Over 1,000 Worldwide

Archer Aviation, developer of eVTOL aircraft, announced that it won the competitive process to acquire the patent portfolio of Lilium GmbH consisting of about 300 advanced air mobility patent assets with a bid of €18M.

The assets include IP relating to prime innovations such as high-voltage systems, battery management, advanced aircraft design, flight controls, electric engines, propellers, and ducted fans.

The acquisition bolsters Archer’s position in next-gen electric aviation and reinforces its commitment to ensuring U.S. leadership in critical eVTOL technology. The transaction is very timely as the advanced air mobility (AAM) sector is seeing some consolidation, including the recent acquisition of Volocopter by a Chinese buyer.

Lilium had spent over $1.5 billion during the development of the technologies related to its visionary eVTOL platform that many considered ahead of its time. The transaction brings to Archer key technologies that bolster a collection of patents on ducted fan technology that is possibly the most extensive in the world.

Beyond Archer’s potential in the AAM sector and in light of the recently-announced MOSAIC rules in the U.S., the company believes Lilium’s ducted fan technology may hold the key to future developments in both the light sport and regional air mobility segments.
