Financially Troubled Silver Airways Files for Bankruptcy

Florida-Based Airline to Continue Operations as Normal

Silver Airways, based in South Florida, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after over a year of financial tension. The airline has reassured customers that all tickets will be upheld and operations will continue as normal.

The carrier’s financial hardships emerged in early 2023 when it was nearly evicted from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) over unpaid fees. The Broward County Commission noted payment issues tracing back to 2021, totaling almost one million dollars.

Silver Airways claimed that filing for bankruptcy protection "allows us to secure additional resources and restructure for long-term success, ensuring we continue to deliver safe, reliable, and comfortable travel experiences." This will “strengthen its competitive position within the aviation industry while ensuring continued service to customers.”

The company hopes to finalize the filing process by the end of March 2025. In the meantime, all purchased tickets will remain valid and the carrier will continue making flights out of Pensacola International Airport (PNS) as usual. New tickets can still be purchased through the company website and third-party resources. There will be no problems with loyalty programs, including through partnerships with JetBlue and United, either.

Silver also expects to complete its financial restructuring by the first quarter of 2025, emerging “stronger and more dedicated” to its passengers. It will then be able to continue its mission serving regional trips in Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean.

The airline provides commercial and cargo services, including island hops between St Thomas and St Croix. Its fleet utilizes ATR-600 series turboprop aircraft and De Havilland DHC-6-300 seaplanes.

“We remain committed to providing reliable service to our customers as we work through this restructuring,” it stated.
