April Fool's Seems Too Good to Be True ('Cause it Is)
"Ultra-Low Fare Carrier" Frontier Airlines surprised onlookers with a surprisingly believable announcement, promising some new aircraft and a most unusual international route.
They announced the upcoming addition of widebody aircraft to the Frontier fleet next June, promising the first order of business would see the start of a twice-weekly flight between John F. Kennedy International Airport of New York to Mote Mute Airport in Bora Bora, French Polynesia.
It was a funky move for a carrier that's supposed to be, in consumer's minds, a bottom-dollar ticket to scoot around the world on the cheap, but Frontier wasn't going to scrimp on the experience: Full catering, lie-flat bed seating, hot towels, drinks, the works were all supposed to be coming into fruition. Even the big boss got in on the fun, promising that April 1st would be a "monumental day in the history of Frontier Airlines."
Frontier CEO Barry Biffle sounded quite excited for the carrier to join the big leagues: "With the addition of new wide-body aircraft to our fleet, we are turning the airline industry on its head with a new luxury flight experience that is a total reimagining of our business model. We are also proud to be the first U.S. ultra-low cost carrier to offer service to the South Pacific."
But, in typical April Fool's fashion, it was all a goof in the end. Those trying to book one of the supposed $100 introduction tickets were greeted with some bad news: "April fools! We aren't really going to add wide-body aircraft to our fleet, or lie-flat seating, or a chef-curated menu, or free wi-fi, or flights to bora bora." They did promise some cheap one-day only fares, but that's cold consolation for those looking forward to some of that delicious microwaved salmon paired with a 350-ml margarita.
