One year ago, the threat of a looming hostile merger by rival US
Airways hung like a cloud over employees at Delta Air Lines. That
merger never came to pass... but renewed talk of another merger is
making Delta's flight attendants nervous, and they're exploring
On its 20th flight, the first F-35 Lightning II successfully
tested engine performance and aircraft handling qualities at up to
20,000 feet as pilots and crew prepare for air refueling in the
coming weeks. Shortly afterward, a dedicated test-bed aircraft
began final check-out flights for airborne testing of the Lightning
II's Communication-Navigation-Identification system, initiating a
test program that will ultimately integrate and fly the complete
F-35 avionics package.
By all indications, 2007 will be a banner year for Boeing and
its European rival, Airbus... but while both planemakers look to
beat all previous sales records, the question of which manufacturer
will come out on top remains up in the air.
Offer More Passenger Room, Shorter T/O Rolls Than E-145
Continental Airlines is working hard to move past the stigma
attached to the word "turboprop" in the minds of many passengers,
as it looks to replace Embraer 145 regional jets with larger
Bombardier Q400 propliners on many routes operating from Newark
Boeing's commercial launch business successfully launched the
second of four Italian Constellation of Small Satellites for
Mediterranean basin Observation (COSMO) SkyMed spacecraft Saturday,
aboard a Delta II rocket for Thales Alenia Space Italia.
United Airlines parent UAL Corp said it has paid down $500
million in debt, and has approved a $250 million special
distribution to shareholders on the basis the airline now has good
cash flow, according to the Associated Press.
In its latest study on "The Market for Regional Transport
Aircraft," Forecast International projects 3,800 regional aircraft
will be produced from 2007 through 2016, including 2,539 regional
jets and 1,261 regional turboprops. The new study estimates the
overall value of this production at $99.7 billion, as measured in
constant 2007 US dollars.
Another American small plane manufacturer is looking to China
for a significant chunk of its business. Liberty Aerospace
announced Monday a 600-plane manufacturing agreement with China's
Anyang Angel Aero Science and Technology Development Co., Ltd. (3A)
worth $150 million.

Avidyne Corporation announced Monday the appointment of David
Copeland as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Most recently,
Copeland was Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Mooney
Airplane Co., where he successfully rebranded the company and
increased sales threefold during his three-year tenure.
Search Continues After A Door And A Body Were Found
Debris from a LifeGuard medevac helicopter and the body of a
flight nurse have been found in Passage Canal near Whittier, Alaska
Saturday afternoon as the search continues for the other three
occupants of the aircraft. The body of flight nurse John Stumpff,
47 of Sterling, Alaska washed up on the shore near the debris,
according to Megan Peters, a spokeswoman with the Alaska State
A mid-air collision Saturday over the Everglades has claimed two
pilots and has triggered an investigation by the National
Transportation and Safety Board into how the accident happened.
NTSB Investigator Paul Cox flew to the crash scene mid-day Sunday,
said Peter Knudson, a spokesman for the safety board. An inspector
from the Federal Aviation Administration will assist him, Knudson
said, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
How time flies... Barely eleven years after the first CT entered
production in June 1997, the Flight Design Team is introducing
their latest bird... the new 'CTLS.' Similar to the preceding CT
models, the changes are cosiderable since the new LS model was
designed to address customer requests from the last two years.
Despite the addition of numerous equipment items the CTLS is just
5-7 lbs heavier than an Advanced CTSW with the same equipment.
NASA has delayed Sunday's launch of space shuttle Atlantis on
its STS-122 mission to the International Space Station. Shuttle
program managers made the decision at 7:24 a.m. EST (Sunday) after
a failure occurred in a fuel sensor system while Atlantis' external
fuel tank was being filled. Space shuttle Atlantis' STS-122 mission
to the International Space Station now is targeted to launch no
earlier than Jan. 2 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center.
Horizon Ups Capacity With RJs To Meet Load Demands
Seattle-bound travelers poured through the Portland
International Airport last week, like the rain that has flooded the
Northwest. Due to the closure of Interstate 5 at Chehalis,
passengers were opting for air travel, according to the Tri-City
Herald. Meeting the demand, Horizon Air sold out seats on its
larger 70-seat regional jets. Normally the airline flies smaller
37-seat turboprops on the Seattle-Portland route.
FAA investigators are looking into an incident at the Newark
Liberty International Airport (EWR) where a jet taxied onto a
runway as an inbound flight was landing. The FAA investigation
comes after a near-miss at the Newark airport Thursday night--just
one day after a GAO report ranked the Newark airport as one of the
most dangerous for runway accidents.
An impending three-day strike at Cyprus Airways could affect
over 100 flights and 12,000 air passengers. Cyprus Airway's largest
union CYNIKA announced the 24-hour strike for December 12 and a 48
hour strike on December 17-18 after failing to reach an agreement.
The announcement flooded its telephone lines with questions from
concerned travelers. The airline said the strike will ruin them
financially but it was examining how to deal with passenger travel,
to ease the situation.
Passengers no longer have to dig for the paper ticket, or worry
about where they put their boarding passes before checking in for a
flight. Continental Airlines and the Transportation Security
Administration launched a program to test using electronic boarding
passes on PDAs or cell phones. The first of it kind boarding pass
offered by a US airline is called the 'Paperless Boarding Pass'
pilot program and was kicked off in Houston, Texas.
