West Point Cadet Injured in Parachute Accident

A Cadet from the US Military Academy at West Point, was seriously injured Sunday in a skydiving accident while jumping from a (civilian) DZ in Gardiner, NY. The injured cadet was identified as Preston Sparks, 21, who apparently encountered difficulties landing, under canopy, after experiencing gusty winds.

Sparks reportedly landed hard at a Sandhill Road ranch (70 miles north of NYC), suffering "severe" injuries to his head, leg, arm and hip. The cadet was airlifted to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY, to undergo surgery Sunday to relieve the effects of some of his injuries.

West Point has not commmented as to whether this was a USMA sanctioned activity.
