Mojave (CA), Near Midnight, September 28th -- The moon
glows in the sky, full and clean, over the hangar from which the
SpaceShipOne/White Knight combination will issue. We all commented
on the moon last night and it was still with us in the morning: in
the sky, and on our minds.
The Society of Experimental Test Pilots (SETP) presented the
Iven C. Kincheloe Award to SpaceShipOne pilots Mike Melvill (shown
below, between Burt Rutan and X Prize Prez Peter Diamandis), Brian
Binnie, and Peter Siebold of SCALED Composites at its gala awards
banquet this past week. The award, named after test pilot Iven
Kincheloe, recognizes the most outstanding achievement in flight
test in the previous year.
Someone, somehow, for some unknown reason, fired a laser right
into the cockpit of a Delta Airlines 737 last week, injuring the
first officer. The TSA, unsure of whether this was a terror attack,
vowed to track down the source of the laser and conduct a full
Meggitt/S-TEC says the FAA has approved an STC for the
installation of the MAGIC Electronic Flight Instrument System
(EFIS) and MAGIC Engine Instrument Display System (EIDS) combined
with a MAGIC 2100 Digital Flight Control System (DFCS) on Cessna
425 turboprop aircraft.

Source: SpaceShipOne pilot Mike Melvill, taking
the heat for a series of unexplained rolls encountered during
Wednesday's X-Prize attempt. As the spacecraft was in the boost
phase of its mission, moving faster than a speeding bullet, it
rolled as many as 30 times while in the vertical. While observers
on the ground were aghast at the unintended maneuver, Melvill said,
"It was kinda fun."

SUMMARY: This amendment adopts a new airworthiness
directive (AD), applicable to all Bombardier Model DHC-8-101, -102,
-103, -106, -201, -202, -301, -311, and -315 airplanes. This
amendment requires a detailed inspection of the wing leading edge
deicer boots to determine if they comply with certain patch limits
in the critical zone; and corrective action, if necessary.
