Aero-TV: AEROLEDS -- Lighting The Way to a Brighter Future

The Aviation World Survives and Grows (Slowly, But Surely) Due To Innovators Like These

AeroLEDs was formed in 2005 'with the intent to redefine aviation lighting as it existed for the last 50 years. With great attention to engineering function balanced with due consideration to product form, we have redefined the expectations of what and how aircraft lighting will be judged.'

ANN is told that AeroLEDs started out with a discussion that came up between the company's founders about the electrical system in a  Kitfox 7A being loaded down too much by halogen landing lights and incandescent position lights and Xenon strobes. When the aircraft landed at night, the low engine RPMs resulted in the generator on the Rotax engine not keeping up with the electrical load, requiring the battery to make up the difference.

The system voltage steadily declined resulting in a brown out that caused the landing lights to dim down to a level that made landing with them difficult. That led to discussions about using LED technology to create aircraft LED landing lights, aircraft LED strobe lights, and LED position lights to greatly reduce current draw and reduce maintenance by eliminating bulb replacements.

Using experience that they had with LED lighting, the fledgling AEROLED team started out doing some crude experiments that proved their initial concepts. At that point, Nate Calvin and his Mechanical Engineering talents were enlisted to help design their first product, the AeroSun 800.
