Screeners Call Cupcakes A Security Risk

Goodies Confiscated At McCarran International In Las Vegas

Add frosted cupcakes to the list of items that can not be brought through a security checkpoint, at least at MaCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.

That's what Rebecca Hains found out the hard way last Wednesday when she attempted to clear security with her red velvet treat, which was packed in an eight-ounce mason jar. She was told that the frosting on the treat was similar enough to gel to violate TSAs restrictions on such items which might be explosives.

ABC News reports that the cupcake, which conformed to the shape of the jar, had been a gift from one of Hains' students. She is a teacher in Peabody, Massachussets, and had carried the jar through security at Logan International in Boston on her way to Las Vegas. The east coast screeners said it looked "delicious" and passed it on through. But on the return trip, it was suddenly a security risk. Hains said she is not sure why something that is "delicious" at one airport is suddenly confiscated at another.

TSA isn't quite sure either. A spokesperson told ABC News that “In general, cakes and pies are allowed in carry-on luggage,” and the agency is looking into why the cupcake was not allowed through.
