Aero-News Presents OSH 2009 Major Sponsor Garmin Avionics

Garmin Avionics: Bringing The Future Into Focus -- Visit Them in Hangar D, #4035 A/B/C, Combo S

20 Years of Innovation: From Garmin Avionics.

It all started two decades ago, with two engineers named Gary and Min, who were convinced that GPS was the future - and formed a business to prove it. Ever since then, pilots have come to expect a constant stream of new ideas, technologies and products from the company that launched its first best-seller with the GPS 100.

Innovation has always been the watchword at Garmin.

From the industry's first IFR approach-certified GPS to today's digital "glass cockpit" systems and advanced WAAS-certified navigators that enable pilots to fly GPS glidepath approaches into airports with no ground-based landing systems - Garmin has continued to reshape the "big picture" of General Aviation flight capability.

Our full line of best-selling panel-mount, remote-mount and portable equipment offers pilots a full range of VFR and IFR choices. All of which bring new levels of safety, convenience, efficiency and fun to any flight.

For example, this year at Oshkosh, Garmin is highlighting the new G600/G500 series retrofit flight display systems. Combining both Primary Flight Display (PFD) and Multifunction Display (MFD) screens in a single bezel, these new units fit neatly into the panel space vacated by the standard six-pack mechanical gauges. Together with a WAAS-capable Garmin avionics stack, these units quickly transform an old-style instrument cluster into a state-of-the-art glass flight deck with reliable AHRS attitude/heading reference and advanced graphical display capabilities.

Both the G600 and G500 come with initial Garmin FliteCharts® and SafeTaxi® diagrams pre-installed. Then, for added situational awareness, a scaled version of Garmin SVT™ Synthetic Vision Technology is now available (standard on the G600, optional on the G500) to create a 3-D "virtual reality" perspective view of flight and enroute terrain features on the PFD screen. Instead of a flat blue-over-brown flight display, users see an in-depth perspective view of their flight situation. The presentation looks so real, it's almost like having a clear day out-the-window view, even in solid IFR, nighttime VFR, or other low visibility conditions.

From a physical standpoint, the G600 and G500 look identical. The difference lies in the options and interfaces provided with each system. Offering a lower price point, the G500 is designed specifically for Class 1/ Class 2 aircraft (under 6,000 lbs). The G600 is also approved for Class 1 and 2 aircraft - as well as for larger Class 3 piston and turbine aircraft between 6,000 lbs and 12,500 lbs MTOW. Class B TAWS alerting is available as an option on the G600 only. And in addition to standard SVT, the G600 also comes standard with a GAD 43 adapter that can emulate many existing gyro interfaces, enabling AHRS data to drive select autopilots in place of a mechanical ADI. This adapter is optionally available with the G500 system.

These new Garmin suites are clearly designed for pilots by pilots. And it's easy to see why, in just 20 short years, Garmin has become the #1 avionics company serving the owner-flown aircraft market.
