ANA Pilots Call Off Threatened Walkout Over Pay, Work Conditions

Negotiations Continue Between Union, Airline

Pilots at All Nippon Airways Wednesday morning called off a threatened walkout over the size of their winter bonuses and the conditions under which they work.

Representatives from the All Nippon Airways Crew Association were continuing negotiations Tuesday night, with the strike looming over the talks between the over the organization --representing 1,500 ANA pilots and engineers -- and the airline, Japan's second largest.

Airline officials said Tuesday night three other affiliated unions serving three subsidiary airlines had previously decided not to participate in a walkout -- perhaps weakening ANA's stance at the bargaining table.

ANA pilots and engineers threatened the one-day walk-out over their work conditions, but weren't specific about the problem they're having with the company, according to a statement to the Associated Press by Nana Kon, an ANA spokeswoman.

If a strike had been called, All Nippon says it would probably have had to cancel or delay more than half of its domestic flights.

Negotiations continue, and all ANA flights are operating normally.
