First PurePower PW1200G Engine Concludes Ground Testing

Airfoil Stress Measurements, Performance, Noise, And Emissions All Evaluated

Ground testing of Pratt & Whitney's first PW1200G family engine – the PW1217G engine for the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) – recently concluded. The engine, the first of an eight-engine validation and certification program, completed more than 300 hours and 1,100 cycles. "We have successfully validated the overall design of the PW1200G engine since starting our test program in April. After completing airfoil stress measurements, we conducted testing to confirm performance, noise and emissions," said Bob Saia, vice president, Next Generation Product Family. "We are very pleased with these initial test results demonstrating that the design is on track to meet our commitments to Mitsubishi. This engine also ran cyclic endurance testing just prior to returning to our Connecticut facility for inspection and re-build for its next test program."

The PW1217G engine test program will run a total of eight test engines through 2012 leading up to aircraft first flight. Entry into service is scheduled for 2014.

The PurePower family of engines is designed to power the next generation of passenger aircraft. The combination of its gear system and advanced core allows PurePower engines to deliver double-digit improvements in fuel efficiency and emissions with a 50-percent reduction in noise over today's engines.

The PurePower engine also has been selected as exclusive power for the Bombardier CSeries aircraft scheduled to enter service in 2013 and to power the Airbus A320neo aircraft family powering the first A320neo aircraft scheduled to enter service in 2015, as well as the Irkut MC-21 narrow-body jet scheduled to enter service in 2016.
