Glider Pilot Survives 24 Hours In Wrecked Plane

An "Extraordinary" Ending

Crews involved in a massive search for a missing glider pilot near Aberdeen, Scotland breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday night... but not as much as the pilot did.

In what many called an "extraordinary" ending, searchers found the unidentified man, alive, in the wreckage of his Ventus 2 glider in the heart of the Cairngorm mountains... over 24 hours after the motorglider went down after taking off from Aboyne.

An RAF Tornado jet spotted the wreckage near the 3,000-foot Ben a'Bhuird summit... and radioed to a Sea King helicopter that flew in, freed the pilot from the wreckage, and transported the 64-year-old pilot to a nearby hospital.

The Scotsman newspaper reports the pilot had been taking part in the Deeside Gliding Club's "Competition Enterprise" event, on a trip to the Inverness area.

Incidentally... the event is "aimed at bringing a sense of adventure back to flying," according to the paper.
