AMA Drone Report 01.10.19: Gov’t Shutdown, DJI Movie Villain, Surfers v Drone

Also: Weather Grounds NYPD, Electric VTOL Aircraft, Anti-Drone Market, Mid-Michigan College

As you are aware, the federal government has been partially shut down until funding legislation is passed.

At this time, there does not appear to be a compromise in sight, as congressional leaders for both parties have taken a firm stance on key issues. The AMA government affairs team has been working with the FAA to address provisions relating to our hobby; however, our correspondence has been reduced due to the furlough. AMA has received a lot of questions regarding FAA registration requirements. On December 12, 2017, Congress reinstated FAA registration for all unmanned aircraft weighing over .55 lbs. For those that registered before then, the FAA extended their expiration date to December 12, 2020. Drones are exciting new technology that have the potential to enhance public safety and save lives, but what might happen if one were in the hands of a deranged serial killer? That is the premise of a new movie "The Drone", which will premiere at the Slamdance Festival in Park City, UT on January 28th. In the movie, directed by Jordan Rubin, a DJI Phantom drone is "possessed" by such a person, and takes on a life of its own. The killer uses the aircraft to terrorize newlyweds Rachel and Chris, played by Alexandra Essoe and John Brotherton, respectively. A surfing event in Hawaii recently took an unusual and potentially illegal approach to protecting its intellectual property when an unauthorized drone was spotted capturing images of the event. The incident occurred at the World Surfing League big wave event at Jaws in Peahi, HI, and of course a video of the incident has been posted on YouTube. Once the drone was sighted, several Safety Water Patrol staffers were dispatched to knock the drone out of the sky. They started by throwing objects such as swim fins at the aircraft, but were unable to knock it from the air. So they called in some big iron in the form of a helicopter. The helo swooped in over the drone (and over the surfers), and the rotorwash knocked the offending DJI Mavic into the Pacific ocean. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
