UK Confirms 10 Aboard Downed C130

Insurgents Claim To Have Shot It Down

The British government Monday confirmed ten people -- nine airmen and a soldier -- were killed when a C130 Hercules went down northwest of Baghdad on Sunday. The question now is, what brought that Hercules down?

Fox News Monday aired a videotape which the Arabic news channel al Jazeera said was from an Iraqi insurgent group. The group, called which claimed it had shot down the RAF C130 with a shoulder-fired missile. A group calling itself the 1920 Revolution Brigades sent the video to the Arabic news channel, saying it had shot down the C130 with a single missile. There was no immediate independent confirmation of the missile launch.

There was no immediate comment from the British Ministry of Defense on the al Jazeera report.

The footage was suspect, however, because it did not show the missile impacting the RAF Hercules.

Wreckage from the aircraft was spread over a relatively wide area, according to the BBC. Weather conditions at the time were said to have been VFR.

"We are aware of reports that the aircraft may have been shot down but we are not in a position to come to any conclusions until the investigation is complete," said British Defense Secretary Jeffery Hoon.
