Icing Protection... For Reno Air Racers?

The Hot Wings Racer Blazes the Course at Reno

Who says that the latest in de-ice technology slows an aircraft? RDD Enterprises, LLC challenges that commonly held belief as they proudly sponsor Mr. Doug Brunner's Lancair Legacy, affectionately and aptly named "Hot Wings."

"As I built my aircraft I knew two things for sure, I needed de-ice equipment and I wanted to race at Reno," stated Brunner.

He went on to say, "Those two objectives may seem incompatible but the Therm-X de-ice system by RDD has an uncommonly low aerodynamic impact on the airframe and is the most advanced system available in general aviation. The addition of Therm-X to my aircraft allowed me to accomplish my two goals and be competitive."

With the venerable Bob Jeffrey at the Legacy controls for the races, Hot Wings hoped to be in the thick of things in the Sport Class Silver. Racing as Jeffrey's USAF call sign, Freedom 142, Hot Wings qualified at 274.754 mph as a basically stock, normally-aspirated Lancair Legacy. In the first heat, Jeffrey coaxed even more performance out of Hot Wings at speeds up to 280.433 mph. Then Jeffrey won the second heat, handily pulling away from the field. Consequently Hot Wings, with the masterful Jeffrey at the controls, is now competing in the Gold events.

"Hot Wings is an exciting aircraft with a technically adept and creative support team behind it. Without the support and hard work of RDD, it would have been impossible to realize my goal of racing at the Reno Air Races - Thank you!" concluded Brunner.

RDD is the exclusive developer and distributor of the full line of Kelly Aerospace's product line, including Therm-X electro-thermal wing and propeller de-icing.
