DOT Issues Fines For Rochester, MN Tarmac Delay

Precedent-Setting Move Against Continental Airlines And ExpressJet

The U.S. DOT levied a total civil penalty of $100,000 against Continental Airlines and ExpressJet Airlines Tuesday for their roles in causing the passengers on board Continental Express flight 2816 to remain on the aircraft at Rochester International Airport for an unreasonable period of time on Aug. 8, 2009.

FAA Sued Over Gainesville, Florida Accident

Crash Victim's Kids Claim Controller Did Not Give Adequate Weather Information

The children of a couple who were killed when the Partenavia P68 in which they were passengers went down short of the Gainesville, Florida airport are suing the FAA for damages "in excess" of $75,000. The NTSB reported that the aircraft approached the airport too low, impacted trees, and went down.

FAA Survey Is The Last Hurdle

Carson City, Nevada is ready to open its newly-constructed eastern runway, and is only waiting for the completion of an FAA survey before putting the airport back in use. The airport closed November 9th for the runway construction, which Carson City officials said was the city's biggest stimulus project at $9.6 million.

The FAA is proposing a rule requiring scheduled airlines to either retrofit their existing fleet with ice-detection equipment or make sure the ice protection system activates at the proper time. B747 Powered By Second Generation Renewable Feendstock

Des Plaines-based UOP LLC announced Monday that its renewable jet fuel process technology was used to convert second-generation, renewable feedstocks to green jet fuel for a biofuel demonstration flight by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. UOP's process technology was used to convert oil from camelina, an inedible plant.

Fell 20 Minutes Short Of Gearbox Failure Requirement

During the certification process for the Sikorsky S-92A, documents show that the aircraft failed a crucial test in which all the oil is drained from the main gearbox to simulate a loss of oil during flight. The test aircraft gearbox failed after about 10 minutes, which is 20 minutes short of the FAA standard.

Italians Hope To Acquire UAV's, Iraqis Want Helicopters

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress November 18 of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Italy of two unarmed MQ-9 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), one Mobile Ground Control Station and associated parts, equipment and logistical support worth approximately $63 million.

58-Year-Old Pilot Killed When Engine Reportedly Siezed

A 58-year-old attorney from Atherton, California, was killed when the Lancair Legacy he was flying apparently suffered an engine failure and went down Saturday afternoon near Watsonville. The pilot, Gary Lampert, was the only person on board.

Naval Education and Training Command

A group of astronauts has just completed survival training provided by the Naval Education and Training Command, or NETC. The command's mission is to educate and train those who serve in the U.S. Navy.
