AMFA Applauds Move... But Wants Checks Overseas, Too
The FAA has ruled all employees at outsourced repair and
maintenance facilities in the US must undergo the same drug and
alcohol testing procedures as those directly employed by domestic
airlines. The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA)
applauded the move, but union representatives also say more must be
done.
The US Sport Aviation Expo is a great place to see what's
shaking in the world of Sport Pilot and Light Sport Aircraft. This
annual event is held at Sebring, Florida, an old World War II
training airfield that's a real nexus of light aviation -- even if
it's probably better known to the general public as a venue for
sports car endurance races.
An "in-flight loss of control" appears to be at the root of last
month's fatal downing of a Lear 35 as it was on approach to land at
Truckee Tahoe (TRK) airport in California, according to the NTSB
preliminary report on the accident.
Airbus can add 30 more aircraft to the 2006 order book -- and
while it's not the largest order the European consortium has
received lately, this one might be especially sweet as those A320s

Authorities searching for a missing Navy T-39
Sabreliner found the wreckage of the plane Wednesday night,
using thermal cameras to locate where the training jet went down in
southern Walker County, Georgia. There were no survivors reported
among the four crewmembers onboard.

Boeing announced Thursday that final assembly work has begun on
the 5,000th 737 at Boeing's manufacturing facility in Renton, Wash.
The airplane, a 737-700 destined for Southwest Airlines, will be
delivered next month.
It might resemble the common household appliance, but the Air
Force Research Laboratory's new satellite is no $82 million flying
dishwasher. In fact, it could be the latest technology NASA could
use to save money -- something that's definitely of interest to the
space agency right now.
It came as a bit of a surprise to all of us: last Friday, the
FAA suddenly established a temporary flight restriction (TFR) area
near Nogales, AZ along the Mexican border
for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flights. The
Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association has let their feelings
about the sudden airspace restriction be known to the FAA.
Deal Includes 68 Aircraft, In-Country MRO And Training
Facilities
At a signing ceremony held Wednesday at Air India's
headquarters, Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Alan
Mulally and Air India Chairman and Managing Director V. Thulasidas
formally announced an order agreement for 68 airplanes, valued at
more than $11 billion at list prices.

Three Vehicles Will Bring SatComm To South America
Boeing announced Wednesday it has received a major commercial
contract for three satellites, along with associated ground support
systems, in partnership with Mobile Satellite Ventures. Financial
details of the deal weren't disclosed; however, this is the largest
commercial satellite order booked by Boeing since 1997.
Representatives with Northrop Grumman told
Aero-News earlier this week the US Air Force's Global
Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle has made its first flight carrying a
new sensor that can detect and identify radar and other types of
electronic devices from an altitude of 60,000 feet.
