Plans Proceeding To Move Main Runway In Evansville

A Highway And Railroad Track Will Have To Be Rerouted

The Evansville, Indiana airport board approved a proposal Monday that would allow the city to move Evansville Regional Airport's main runway nearly a half mile to the northeast.

A nearby highway and railroad track would have to be relocated to accommodate the new runway. Under new federal guidelines, the southwestern end of the runway would be too close to U.S. 41.

The Associated Press reports that some residents are concerned that the move would bring airplanes closer to their neighborhoods than is necessary. Airport manager Bob Working said the new runway would improve safety, as well as accommodating larger aircraft at the airport.

The FAA has not yet approved the plan, which carries an estimated price tag of $40 million.
