The RC Airplane Industry had seen some lean years, particularly in 2016 as model aircraft hobbyists found themselves grouped in with hobbyist drone pilots in the eyes of the FAA. But even before the decision voiding the FAA's unmanned aircraft registry, AMA president Dave Mathewson said that he was anticipating a resurgence in the industry.
Speaking to ANN CEO and Editor in Chief Jim Campbell at the AMA convention held in January, Mathewson said that the multi-rotor segment was actually providing a boost for the model aircraft market, and presents multiple opportunities for the Academy of Model Aeronautics.
Mathewson said that advances in technology for traditional model aircraft have made it much easier for people to get involved, and that he does not foresee the pace of technological advances slowing anytime soon. He said a lot of the technology being developed for multi-rotor aircraft will find its way into the hands of those flying traditional model aircraft.
Mathewson said that if there was one thing he would like to impress on the FAA, it's that the AMA has been around for 80 years, and its member fly under safety protocols developed by the Academy. He said that model aircraft flown by AMA members are arguably the safest thing operating in the National Airspace.
