University Of Illinois May Ground Aviation Program

Interim Chancellor Says It Is Too Costly To Continue

The interim chancellor of the University of Illinois has recommended the elimination of the school's aviation program in a cost-saving move.

In a letter dated on Thursday, Robert Easter said the program was "expendable" as the school refined its focus on other areas of study. The Associated Press reports that Easter said the school could save as much as $750,000 by eliminating the program.

The letter did indicate that it might be possible to make a non-degree aviation program work financially. He also called for a public hearing on the recommendation, but has not yet set a date for that event.
