Gunman Captured, Base Open After Brief Lockdown
ANN REAL TIME UPDATE 12.01.05 1930 EST --
Officials at NAS Ft. Worth JRB at Carswell are now reporting they
believe sailor who brought a gun into the base's operations center
was attempting to commit suicide, and two men who were injured when
they struggled to wrest the weapon from him were the enlisted man's
supervisors.
According to Base commander Capt. John McCormack, the sailor
was critically injured when his gun fired in the melee, and the two
men attempting to stop him were grazed.
An enlisted sailor shot
two service members before turning the gun on himself Thursday
afternoon at Naval Air Station Ft Worth, Joint Reserve Base in
Texas. All three were taken to area hospitals, with the suspect in
critical condition.
According to Navy Capt. John McCormick, the sailor walked into
the base operations center around 12:30 pm and shot two
others, a Navy officer and an enlisted man, before shooting
himself. Both men reportedly have non-life-threatening injuries,
McCormick told DFW's CBS-11.
It is not known at this time if the gunman used his own firearm,
or if he was authorized to carry a gun as part of his position at
the base. Personal weapons are prohibited on base.
The military reserve base -- formerly Carswell Air Force Base --
was locked down briefly following the shooting but has since
reopened. Nearly 8,000 Navy, Air Force, and Marine reservists are
assigned to the base.
The Texas Air National Guard is also based at the facility west
of Fort Worth, TX.
