Glider down In Dansville, NY. One Fatally Injured

Pilot Was A Member Of The Fingerlakes Soaring Club

The pilot of a glider was fatally injured Saturday when the aircraft he was flying went down in an area well known for soaring activities.

The pilot was identified as James Rizzo. He was a member of the Fingerlakes Soaring Club which is based at the Dansville Airport in Dansville, NY. The aircraft he was flying went down Saturday afternoon about 1530 EDT near the airport.

There was a soaring competition sponsored by the Soaring Society of America going on at the time of the accident, but television station WHAM reports that Rizzo was not taking part in the competition. The 66-year-old pilot was taken to Noyes Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Genesee Sun reports that the glider went down in a farmer’s field near the airport. He had reportedly been flying for over three hours when the accident occurred. The fuselage of the aircraft reportedly broke into two pieces as a result of the impact, and one wingtip was reported to be "broken."
