A Dozen Sukhoi Fighters Sold By Russia To Vietnam

Third Such Sale In The Past Several Years

Russia has reportedly sold a dozen Sukhoi-30 multirole combat aircraft to Vietnam for more than $600 million, according to the Russian news agency Interfax relayed by the French news service AFP Tuesday.

The fighters which can travel twice the speed of sound will be delivered in 2014 and 2015 under the deal signed last week, according to a military-diplomatic source cited by Interfax.

The purchase is the third by Vietnam of Sukhoi fighters.

The aircraft, also known as a "Flanker-C" (NATO), was introduced into operational service in 1996. According to Wikipedia, the aircraft is a modernized version of the Su-27UB and has several variants. The Su-30K and Su-30MK series have had commercial success.

RIA Novosti reports that the aircraft being sold to Vietnam are the MK2 variant of the fighter. It is described as an "advanced two-seat version of the Su-27 Flanker ... with upgraded electronics and capability to launch anti-ship missiles."
